Calf Muscles

CALF MUSCLES (GASTROCSOLEUS)

The gastrocnemius and soleus muscles make up the calf muscles. They work together to push the ankle down (like pointing the toes down)

STRETCH EXERCISE

-find something like a book or towel that you can step on with the ball of your foot

-keep the knee straight

-If you start to get a cramp do this stretch immediately

-try to maintain this position while sleeping

STRETCH POSITION FOR SLEEP

–avoid having toes pointed, this promotes cramp

-try to keep the ankles bent with ankle / toes pointed up

-Try keeping bed covers loose at the foot of your bed and not tucked in

Have the toes pointed down like this shortens the muscle and often provokes a cramp.

Devices can be purchased that can keep the calf and foot muscles in a stretch position while you sleep.
